Desert and Deserters.
Sir William Napier never was an advocate for brutal punishments. Talking of deserters, and the cruel way in which they are “lettered” with a hot iron, he said indignantly one day: “You may take my word, no soldier was ever improved by it. On the contrary, the soldier, like port wine, inveriably turns out the worse for being brand(i)ed.”
